Whilst Greg Jackson CEO of Octopus Energy (who we really rate) says he has no interest in traditional things like human resources and information technology departments.
He also says he expects his managers to take personal responsibility for these things (with appropriate training) rather than “shelving responsibility to a third party” – just as he used to do when managing his teams.
The key here is the “appropriate training”, so whilst he has no interest in traditional departments he still expects his team to be trained to deal with the sometimes complex issues. So he has no departments but does have the skills.
So while Octopus Energy might be reducing the costs in having separate HR & IT departments, they have still invested time and money to ensure people have the “appropriate training”
