Applying for a New Role

Where do I start?

Looking for a new role can be both exciting and challenging at the same time. Start by deciding what you want from your next role. Think about the work you enjoy, the skills you want to use or develop, and what matters to you such as pay, location, hours, flexibility or career progression. Search job boards and employer websites, sign up for alerts, register with some reputable recruitment agents, let people in your network know what you’re looking for and continue to network if you can as this will ensure you remain visible. This stage of the process is not always easy and can be very challenging if you are not taken forward with a role, you really wanted but don’t give up, your perfect role is out there waiting for you! It may feel like it, however you don’t need to apply for every vacancy, focus on roles that fit your priorities.

How do I know if a role is right for me?

Look at the responsibilities, required skills, working arrangements and pay. Consider what you want from your next move and whether the role fits your experience and goals. If something important is unclear, ask the recruiter or employer before applying.

What should I include in my application?

Tailor your CV and application to each individual role at the same time as remaining truthful in the content. Highlight relevant experience, skills and achievements and explain why you’re interested. Be accurate about your qualifications and work history.

What should I ask before accepting an offer?

Ask about the responsibilities, salary, benefits, working hours, location, start date, reporting line and opportunities for development. Make sure you understand any conditions attached to the offer, including checks or references.

Starting the role

What should I expect on my first day?

Your employer should explain where to go, who to meet and what to bring. You’ll usually be introduced to the team and given an overview of the role, workplace policies and any initial training.

What is a probation period?

A probation period is an opportunity for you and your employer to get to know the role and working relationship and determine if the role is the right fit for you. You can settle in, learn what the job involves and get support, while your employer checks in on how things are going and offers feedback along the way.

During probation

What should I do to succeed during probation?

Make sure you understand what is expected of you. Ask questions, take part in training, seek feedback and raise concerns early. Regular communication can help you spot where you’re doing well and where you may need support.

Will I receive feedback during probation?

You should have check-ins or reviews to discuss your progress. If you’re unsure how you’re doing, ask your line manager for feedback and clear examples of what you can continue or improve.

What if I’m struggling in the role?

Speak to your line manager as soon as you can. Explain what you’re finding difficult and ask what support, training or adjustments may be available. Raising concerns early gives you and your employer a chance to address them.

Can my probation period be extended?

It may be possible if your contract allows it, your employer feels this is appropriate and explains the reason and the new review date. Ask what you need to achieve during the extension and what support you’ll receive.

What happens when probation ends?

Your employer should let you know whether you’ve passed, whether your probation will be extended, or whether your employment will end. Check your contract for details about notice and any changes to your terms or benefits.

Do I have employment rights during probation?

Yes. A probation period does not remove your legal rights. Your contract may set out different arrangements for notice or benefits, so read it carefully and ask your employer if anything is unclear.
