Employing people with learning disabilities promotes diversity in the workplace and can help a company to maintain a positive reputation for corporate social responsibility.

Not only that, but people with learning disabilities can also make amazing employees. Often, they’re loyal and dedicated, hardworking, and a pleasure to have around. They can boost morale, motivate your teams, and even reduce employee turnover.

This June we celebrate Learning Disability Week (19th-25th). This year, the goal is to let the world know what it’s like to live with a learning disability.

It’s a great opportunity for you to open up conversation around learning disabilities in the workplace, and outside of it.

Will you be spreading awareness in your business this year?

There are a few things you can do at work that will help employees with learning disabilities feel more included. But also to help raise awareness and acceptance amongst your other employees.

You may wish to hold inclusion and diversity training or workshops, you could invite a speaker to your workplace to give a talk. Or you could hold a fundraising event for a charity that helps people with learning disabilities find work or provides support in everyday life.

If you’ve never hired an employee with a learning disability before, it’s something you shouldn’t rule out. Learning disabilities come in all shapes and sizes. Someone may be weaker in one area, but bring a new perspective or skill set to another.

If you’d like more help or advice on understanding learning disabilities. Or how to make sure employees with learning disabilities thrive in your business, give us a call.
